What's really going on in Honduras? It is hard to know. The newspapers and our government seem bent on returning Zelaya to the Presidency. But why? Yes, I realize he was an elected president who was in charge of a democracy, at least in appearances. But look what this man was doing; he was about to have a "referendum" in order to make it easier to run for president, again. This is a guy who was trying to overstay his term as president, and looking for devious ways to make it legal. Zelaya was trying to change the constitution to keep himself in power!
This is disturbing. And even more disturbing are his supporters, both Chavez (Venezuela) and Ortega (Nicaragua). I believe he is now in El Salvador, and possibly heading to Washington! Ugh.
We have gotten emails from our friends in Honduras who seem so perplexed as to why CNN and the U.S. are not helping to get rid of this guy. The emails have suggested that there was not a coup.
The Miami Herald has complete coverage of the situation in Honduras. http://www.miamiherald.com/ There are a great many Hondurans in Miami who travel back and forth between the countries, so the information tends to be a little more honest (IMO).
So what does this have to do with homeschooling? The kids and I have had several really great conversations this past weekend about presidential terms, constitutions, and tying right in to our own holiday, the 4th of July and independence. We read through the Declaration of Independence and related it to what is going on in Honduras. Here's a passage to think about:
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
To me, when the Supreme Court, Congress and the Military all agree to remove a President, there is something going on.
